Island Peak Expedition – Nepal

    Island Peak Expedition – Nepal

Island (Imja Tse) peak, is 6000 meters in elevation and is a peak climbing mountain in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. This famous climbing peak in the upper Khumbu region was named Island peak in 1951 by the group of Eric Shipton and named after when the peak appears as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. This beautiful peak in the Himalayas was later renamed in 1983 to Imja Tse but the Island peak name has stuck and most people still call it that. This peak is located in the eastern part of Dingbochevillage regionand is an extension of the ridge coming down off the south of Mount Lhotse Shar.  Island peak was first climbed in 1953 by a British team as a training exercise before climbing to Mount Everest. The first climber of Mount Everest Tenzing Norgey was one of the members of this first ascent team of Island peak. This trekking/climbing expedition is one of the most popular trekking peaks in the Nepal Himalayas and itsdifficulty is graded at (alpine PD+) and can be summited with the support of a Nepalese climbing guide.

This Island peak expedition trip combines the Gokyo Valley and the Mount Everest base camp. The trek begins after a scenic flight to Lukla. We then trek through the picturesque homelands of many Sherpa communities. The trail follows many Sherpa farm villages with beautiful lakes and see the glacier in Gokyo. The Gokyo Ri and Kalapathar are two of the best view points for outstanding view of many higher mountains including Mt. Everest. After visiting Everest base camp we enter the Imja valley and hike to Island peak base camp. We have 2 days to climb Island peak which includes an extra day in case the weather does not co-operate on our first attempt. The climbing is challenging but this provides one of the most impressive and spectacular mornings that a Himalayan climber could dream of. After reaching the summit we re-track back to Kathmandu and our trip concludes with your final departure.
